Apart from the full time Art & Fashion Programme, YWIES Shanghai Gubei is opening more and more after-school Fashion & Textiles Courses and Workshops which allows not only Yew Wah students but also all the other students interested in creative arts to reach the world-class teaching staff and resources in the fashion & textiles area.

Over 30 years of extensive experience in the fashion industry with assignments in Milan, Paris and New York City;Designer and creative force behind fashion houses Versace, Sonia Bogner, Maska, Caractere, Joan & David, Magaschoni, Zoran and Natori;Working directly with Gianni Versace (founder of Versace, world-class fashion designer), Zoran Ladicorbic (known for extremely minimalist), and Joan Helpern (Co-founder of Joan & David);Adjunct Professor at Parsons School of Design, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Kent State University Fashion School and New York University Steinhardt Graduate School;Fashion Consultant for China Institute New York (founded in 1926 by renowned scholars and educators, the oldest non-profit organisation in America solely dedicated to advancing a deeper understanding of China);Creative Consultant for China Institute Fashion Design Competition, and Supima Cotton Fashion Design Competition



Yoon-kyung Kim

Designer, merchandiser, colorist, market researcher and educator; Graduated from Rhode Island School of Design

Yoon was formally trained in art starting at a young age attending art schools in South Korea and later in the U.S. with a degree in textile design from Rhode Island School of Design. In her subsequent years working, she has developed her career in New York City, Seoul, Shanghai, and Suzhou as a designer, merchandiser, colorist, market researcher and educator. Over the past decade, she has been in various teaching positions for fashion, textiles and fine arts in China. Much of her inspiration in creating and teaching art and design is drawn from her diverse experience from all corners of the world. She loves that possibilities are endless (and endlessly interesting) in design and education.

Fashion Design Portfolio Course

Designed for students preparing a fashion portfolio for college admission.

This course aims to help students to prepare and update well-edited portfolios that artfully represent their unique story and design vision.

Students are guided to do research, edit and refine the presentation of their work to effectively communicate their artistic skills, personal interest, style and taste;

This course strengthens students’ creative and conceptual abilities, deepen their research process and social awareness;

And ultimately building a well-rounded artistic portfolio to tell their own individual story.

Fashion Workshop – Once Upon a T-Shirt: Recreate & Repurpose T-Shirt

Designed for students interested in Fashion Design.

T-shirt, a simple garment, has transformed into an iconic and powerful item in fashion and culture. It is associated with a movement of rebellion, and became the powerful messaging platform that we know them as today. T-shirt is really a basic way of telling the world who and what you are, a blank canvas for self-expression.

This workshop gives a brief history of T-shirt and its development over the century.

Students learn basic sketching techniques to design from T-shirt to other fashion items, hands-on draping, manipulation and experimentation on re-creating their own T-shirt on a dress-form mannequin.

Fashion Workshop – Once Upon a Paper: Mannequin Paper Draping

Designed for students interested in Fashion Design.

Fashion draping is an important part of fashion design process, allowing the designer to create form and structure, pattern and texture, and playing with the way fabric folds and hangs on a body to create new designs.

A unique and creative design workshop for students to drape, dress and adorn on a dress-form mannequin.

Only white paper is used to create dramatic designs exploring on a variety of manipulation techniques including origami, pleating, folding, fraying, slashing, crumpling and other paper cutting art and ornamentation.

Textile Workshop – Once Upon a Blue: Resist T-Shirt Dyeing

Designed for students interested in Textiles.

Natural blue indigo-dye has a long history in China, dating back to the Qin and Han Dynasties (BC 221-220), and indigo-dyed cloth had been used as a main material for clothes for at least 1,000 years.

This hands-on workshop let you discover the world of indigo dyeing while exploring the art of resist tie-dyeing.

Students learn the basic dyeing techniques that involve folding, twisting, wrapping, stitching, binding and bunching cloth to create incredible patterns with the indigo dye.

Discover your talents and be amazed as the stunning one-of-a-kind patterns unravel and reveal yourself from a simple white T-shirt to magical transformations.

TTextile Workshop – Once Upon a Scarf: Shibori with Indigo

Designed for students interested in Textiles.

Discover the world of indigo dyeing while exploring the art of Shibori, an ancient resist tie-dyeing technique dated back to the 8th century. There are infinite ways one can apply Shibori techniques to bind, stitch, fold or twist to create patterns on chosen fabric surface.

Through this hands-on workshop, students learn the basics of Shibori resist dyeing technique to create beautiful circular and amazing one-of-a-kind patterns with indigo dye on a scarf.

Keeping an open mind about the end result and enjoying the imperfect nature of the design process is all part of the journey in this workshop.
