YWIES has specially designed projects and activities to build up students’ knowledge and practical experience for life and work. Students will learn to assume responsibilities for family, school, and community and others.
Character Development class is a required subject at Yew Wah, in which under the guidance of teachers, students will focus on one character in one month such as respect, perseverance and discernment. Their good character will be nurtured through ways of case study, keynote presentation, discussion and journals reflection. Yew Wah firmly believes our students will benefit from these good characters for a lifetime.
During summer vacation, Yew Wah organises service camps to the far away rural areas of China, bringing dynamic English classes and team activities to those local students. Yew Wah students serve as the teaching assistants of foreign volunteer teachers. In helping others, Yew Wah students can truly understand the meaning of “we make a living by what we get and we make a life by what we give.”
Social Service Club is a traditional Co-curricular activity at Yew Wah. They conduct voluntary services with two children’s centres in Shanghai and Guangzhou regularly. They also raise funds for the centres through different activities such as the charity dinner in which the donated artworks of students, teachers and friends are auctioned. Key Club is another social service organisation at Yew Wah. Working together with the Cycling Club, they planned a charity cycling to Nanjing Aide Center for Autistic Children, not only calling for green commuting and keeping fit, but also drawing more attention to caring for the autistic children. Meanwhile, they raised a donation of RMB 10,000 yuan for the centre.
To Understand, Participate in and Make Contributions to Society
Students will learn to assume responsibilities to family, school, the community and others. Every year students will have opportunities for social services such as visiting homes for the aged and orphanages.
System-Wide Seeds of Hope Charity Project
In recognition of the Yew Wah motto, “to align with love and charity”, Seeds of Hope project is our first network-wide charity. Seeds of Hope was established after the tragic Sichuan earthquake in 2008. Through various initiatives, including the hugely successful Seeds of Hope Concert, all stakeholders throughout Yew Wah locations joined to raise funds, and the Sichuan Earthquake Educational Development (SEED) was established to help finance the restoration of the Minzhu Primary School in Anyue County, Ziyang City, Sichuan Province.
From the original SEED funds emerged the greater vision of Seeds of Hope, which grew into a partnership with the China Youth Development Foundation. This partnership has resulted in the establishment of Seeds of Hope Schools in various parts of rural China, with the goal of building one school each year.
