In just 4 years, our school has grown from the inaugural class of 5 students to over 200 students. Below are 10 reasons why:
1. Excellent results on University of Cambridge exams: 32% A* or A on this year¡¯s IGCSE exams, which compares favorably with the UK average of 19%. 65% of students taking five or more exams received 2 or more A* or A¡¯s.
2. Acceptance into top universities: Although this year is the first year we will have Senior Year 4 students who take the Cambridge A2 examinations, we have had students decide to go to university after finishing their IGCSE exams or AS exams. Those early leaving students have been accepted into some excellent schools including: Syracuse University, Ohio University, University of British Columbia, University of Minnesota, Azusa Pacific University, Iowa State University, Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
3. Highly qualified teachers: In Yew Wah classrooms, we give students much more than test preparation skills. We have 22 full-time expatriate teachers. We have a 1:9 expatriate teacher to student ratio. Over 50% of these teachers have master degrees or doctorates. Our expatriate and bilingual teachers combine the best practices from the east and the west and use case studies, research projects, interdisciplinary approaches, etc. to help our students develop creative and critical thinking skills.
4. Small class sizes: We strive to give our students much individual attention. Most of our classes have fewer than 25 students; some classes, especially elective classes at the A level have less than 10 students.
5. A strong Chinese curriculum: Unlike other A level / IGCSE schools, we offer the Chinese subject in all levels because we understand that Chinese is now one of the most significant international languages. Our Chinese curriculum is supported by Yew Wah¡¯s strong team of experts and researchers.
6. Broad selection of elective courses: We are committed to offering students a wide selection of electives at the IGCSE & A levels. This year we are offering A level accounting, art and design, biology, business studies, chemistry, Chinese, economics, further mathematics, mathematics, physics, and psychology. No school in Shanghai offers a wider range of A level courses.
7. Character Education focus: We believe that ¡°the foundation of education is the formation of character.¡± Therefore, in addition to equipping our students with academic excellence, we provide them with a variety of specially designed projects and activities for character development.
8. Varied activities program: Our students benefit from an activities program that includes sports teams and competitions, tennis and golf classes, music lessons, rock climbing, team building games, band, choir, drama, business club, science club, environment club, cooking club, dance club, media club, etc. etc. Our new campus, which is located less than 10-minute walk from the Lou Shan Guan Road Metro station, is equipped with facilities for all these purposes.
9. A Study Center in England: We are the only school of our kind to have our own overseas study center. This study center is located in a beautiful and tranquil area of southwest England ideal for English immersion, as well as for getting used to life and study in the west. In the course of their education, all students will have two opportunities to spend a month in this center improving their English and preparing for Cambridge exams.
10. Tuition Scholarships: This year we initiated the ¡®Madam Tsang Chor-hang Memorial Scholarship Program¡¯. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, and we are awarding up to 10 scholarships a year. This is an exciting development which is going to attract the highest quality students to our school.
