I used to practise drawing without any systematic learning. In Year 11, I began to think what I plan to do in the future. After taking some sketching tutoring during that time, I chose the elective of Art & Design in Year 12 at Yew Wah. For me, the most challenging part was actually not the drawing skills but the way of thinking and the process of creating portfolios. My art teacher has given me tremendous help and guidance. When I was doing my first art portfolio, I was at a loss, but when it came to the second piece, I was a lot more confident at the creation process. Finishing my study of animation in the US, I plan to go to Japan for further study.
I’ll major in Interaction Design in college. We use different kinds of apps in daily life, but I find some of them are not that user friendly. I’m really interested in solving those problems and making it more convenient for our life.
Although I haven’t chosen Fashion Design as a college major, I have a strong passion for it. We have a world-class fashion design instructor to teach us at school, from whom I have learnt systematically about fashion design. Fashion drawing is very different from drawing in fine art; for example different drawing skills will be used on different sleeve and skirt hemline styles. Meanwhile, I have got a deeper understanding of the fabrics and dyeing techniques. I was so amazed when I saw my concepts were translated into fabrics for the first time!
My parents and brother have deeply influenced me on art. There was not much art atmosphere when I was in the local middle school, but when I came to Yew Wah, I had the opportunity to pick two art related electives—Art & Design, Design & Technology. That’s when I formally started my art learning and art creation. The course of study has changed me a lot in my way of thinking. I can put more individual perspectives and deeper thinking into my essay writing and presentation of my artwork.
My goal is returning to China after studying abroad for certain span of time, and hopefully making contributions to creating better art atmosphere for Shanghai and China.
Art is a special way to present myself. I want to be a creator and try the unlimited possibilities in the world. Yew Wah has given me a lot of freedom in creating new things. Apart from drawing and painting, I’ve also been learning dancing for many years. I’m thinking of combining these two interests together and studying Stage Design to give actors, performers and artists a better performing experience.
My passion for basketball has introduced me to the world of street wear and sneakers. I have a dream that one day my own brand or my store could collaborate with Nike. I want to share with the young generation a concept about fashion: it’s not only about clothes; it can be a chair or even architecture. It’s important to think out of the box and never to restrain yourself.
Mr David Leung, my Fashion Design teacher has taught me many fashion skills that I was lacking, such as fashion sketching, and how to steer away from bottlenecks of thoughts and ideas. I’m really impressed with his passion for fashion and patience for education.
Yew Wah offers many resources to the art students. We had a screen-printing workshop recently, which was instructed by an expert in that field and served as a good opportunity for us to explore and experiment with different materials, processes and techniques. Art is looking not only at pretty objects, but also at uncharming or distorted ones. We need to level eyes with the world reflected in art.
