This science competition has shown me that science is not merely a dry academic discipline. The process of designing and making algae paper turned out to be highly engaging for me. This research experience has made me reconsider my initial inclination to withdraw from my science classes during AL, reigniting my passion for the subjects.

Additionally, winning this competition has significantly boosted my confidence to pursue further research. Moving forward, we plan to refine the algae paper making process we developed. One idea I have is to explore its exceptional water-absorption capacity. Furthermore, if we can enhance its toughness and durability while maintaining this superior absorbency, the resulting material could contribute to flood prevention and relief efforts. We also plan to study the development of algae-based fabric for both commercial applications and artistic design, accelerating the creation of an eco-friendly, renewable, and sustainable textile.

Finally, I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. It has allowed me to engage with, and bring to life, scientific concepts I once considered purely abstract or even fanciful. Most importantly, I’ve learned that when something seems impossible, you should try it first—never say “never” until you’ve made the attempt.

The part I enjoyed most about this research was combining classical culture with modern issues. While trying to solve the problem of excessive algal growth, we drew inspiration from classical papermaking and explored ways to make paper from Cladophora.

I am also deeply grateful to my school for raising our awareness of cultural heritage. The teachers encouraged us to learn from classical culture and adapt it to modern contexts. Through continuous experimentation, we realized that ancient techniques alone often fail to address contemporary challenges—innovation is key. In this study, we embodied this principle by modifying traditional papermaking techniques and incorporating the unique properties of algae.

Finally, I would like to thank Cambridge for creating and honouring this competition. This was my first time completing a relatively rigorous scientific study, which provided invaluable practice in logical thinking and teamwork.

This science research challenged me to think critically and solve complex problems. Throughout the experiment, our team faced several obstacles, but through collaboration and persistent effort, we successfully overcame them. Each member contributed valuable ideas, and after multiple iterations, we successfully produced algae paper from Cladophora that can be used in our art classes.

Moving forward, we plan to refine our papermaking process, optimize the use of Cladophora, and improve the paper’s performance. By doing so, we aim to transform waste into a valuable resource while addressing the issue of algal overgrowth in our school’s surrounding waters.

We are deeply honoured to have participated in this science competition. Through this experience, we've not only expanded our scientific knowledge but also significantly developed our problem solving abilities and teamwork skills. The challenges we faced throughout the project pushed us to think creatively and work collaboratively to find innovative solutions.

One of our first major obstacles was the lack of access to industrial paper making machinery. This limitation led us to explore traditional papermaking techniques instead. However, we quickly discovered that algae fibres behaved quite differently from traditional paper materials, making the paper forming process particularly challenging. Through careful analysis of algae's unique properties, we were able to adapt our papermaking method to better suit this unconventional material. When we found ourselves without specialized equipment to test the paper's properties, we demonstrated resourcefulness by developing our own testing system using the tools available in our school laboratory. Another significant breakthrough came when we addressed the issue of loosely structured fibres, even after extensive grinding of the algae, we solved this by experimenting with various filler materials to reinforce the paper's structure.

Despite these accomplishments, we recognize there are still many areas for improvement and further investigation. Key questions remain about the economic viability of algae paper and how it might be adapted for modern manufacturing processes. We're particularly interested in developing more rigorous testing methods and finding better ways to remove impurities from filamentous algae. An important environmental consideration is whether large scale harvesting of filamentous algae might cause unintended ecological consequences that need to be addressed.

Looking beyond paper production, we see exciting potential applications for this research. Algae based paper could have artistic uses in craft production, or serve practical purposes as cleaning paper after proper bleaching and sterilization processes. Perhaps most intriguing is the possibility of developing algae into other sustainable materials, such as fabrics, which could open up new possibilities for environmentally friendly textile production. This project has not only deepened our appreciation for scientific research but has also shown us how creative problem solving can lead to sustainable innovations with real world applications.
